Product Review – Tag Reader

A friend of mine, another mother of a child on the spectrum, recommended the Tag Reader from LeapFrog Learning Systems and I’m so glad she did! I’ve been working on teaching Logan to read phonetically (I’m a firm believer that phonics are more effective than memorization) and with the Tag Reader, it was easy for him to point to a word with the pen and sound it out.

The only down side I’ve found to this system is that it does require a computer with access to the internet to download the books to the pen. For me, that’s not a problem, but not every family has the internet, so I can see where that might be a real issue for some.

The books are age appropriate and contain characters that Logan is familiar with and enjoys. The volume of the pen can be turned down (though Logan learned very quickly how to turn it up) and the associated online games and rewards are a nice touch that we have enjoyed. The games contained in the books themselves are good comprehension and observation games.

Overall, I have been quite pleased with the Tag Reader.

Tag Reader from LeapFrog – $49.99

Rating: 4 1/2 stars (because it does require a computer with internet access)
