A lesson about generosity

One thing we always wanted for our children is for them to value and respect the things we are blessed with. It is hard to explain to our son Hunter. He knows that we can buy him things for his birthday and for Christmas. He doesn’t understand that not all people are as fortunate to have the things he has.

So we started the gift of giving last year. We explained to him that some people do not have money for food or any presents for the holidays. When we saw the Salvation army outside of stores, we explained that those people were collecting money to help those in need.

By explaining the salvation army and what they do, he had a concrete way to understand the concept of poverty. When asked about the salvation army and what they do, he proudly said “they help people that do not have money for food”.

Now, everytime we see them ringing their bells, we must give to help others. It is a big lesson to him. He is very happy to share his dollar to help other kids and their families. He makes me so proud. The fact that we have instilled a sense of generosity in our son makes the holidays so much more meaningful to us. It’s not just about gifts, its about family, love and hope for all.
